BUFFALO — University at Buffalo wrestler Kyle Akins was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic Team on Tuesday. Awarded annually, the NWCA All-Academic Team is comprised of 135 student-athletes.
Also named to the 2017 Academic All-MAC team earlier this year, Akins is an environmental studies major with a 3.34 grade point average. He went 22-7 on the season, including a perfect 8-0 in duals at 125 lbs. The redshirt-sophomore finished fourth at the MAC Championships to advance to the NCAA Championships. Akins went 2-2 at the NCAAs.
Of the 135 individuals selected, 115 wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Division I championships, including Akins, up from 101 last season and an increase of 19 since 2014-15
