BUFFALO — The visiting Syracuse Orange snapped a three-game losing skid with a pair of non-league wins over Canisius on Wednesday, scoring a 9-0 win in five innings before downing the Golden Griffins 8-2 in the nightcap at the Demske Sports Complex. Syracuse is now 21-15 on the year, while Canisius slipped to 15-24 with the two losses.
Syracuse took advantage of five Canisius errors in the first game to earn the 9-0 victory in five frames. The Orange led 4-0 after three, then plated five runs in the fifth inning, with the key hit coming from sophomore Bryce Holmgren, who drove in two runs with an RBI-single through the left side of the infield. The nine runs were more than enough for starting pitcher Alexa Romero, who earned her eighth win of the season after she allowed three hits and fanned seven through five innings of work.
For Canisius, senior Samantha Sharkey, sophomore Denver Keller and freshman Gianna Degaltini each had a base hit in the loss for the Blue and Gold. Sophomore Lauren Castro took the loss for the Blue and Gold after she allowed nine runs, eight of which were unearned, on five hits.
In the second game, Syracuse picked up right where it left off, scoring eight runs in the first two innings to jump out to an 8-0 lead after two innings of play. Canisius got on the board in the home-half of the third when senior Lindsey Silfer scored on an error by Syracuse’s infield, and then junior Moriah Harris made the score 8-2 in the fifth when she ripped a solo homer to the gap in right center with two outs in the inning. The Blue and Gold tallied six hits in the game two loss, led by Harris’ homer. Deglatini went 1-for-4 to extend her hitting streak to three straight, and senior Taylor Decker also had a base hit in the losing effort.
Canisius return to action Saturday when the team goes on the road to play a MAAC doubleheader at Siena. First pitch is set for noon. The series at Siena will start an eight-game road swing for the Blue and Gold, which will run through April 23 at Monmouth.
