AMHERST — The Niagara baseball team won a close game with Saint Peter’s, 3-2, on Saturday to improve to 11-9 on the season.
The Purple Eagles took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Battaglia singled to left field to send Joel Brophy home. NU extended its lead, 2-0, in the bottom of the second. With two runners on base, Tanner Kirwer singled, then advanced to second on a throwing error by shortstop. Nick Bernick scored. The Peacocks cut Niagara’s lead in half in the top of the fifth, but the Purple Eagles quickly answered. In the bottom of the fifth, Cullen had an RBI single to give NU the 3-1 lead. Though Saint Peter’s scored once more in the top of the seventh, the Peacocks could not overcome the Purple Eagles and Niagara came away with the victory.
Niagara continues its series with Saint Peter’s on Sunday. The Purple Eagles and the Peacocks will play a doubleheader starting at noon at Bobo Field at Niagara University.
