BUFFALO — Millennium Collaborative Care, PPS, in partnership with Greater Buffalo United Ministries, the University at Buffalo School of Nursing, will be hosting five Million Hearts® health screening events throughout the month of April at Buffalo-area churches and community centers. Adults 18-years of age and older can visit the following for free health screenings:

  • Sat., April 1, 2017 9 AM – Noon Say Yes Buffalo Herman Badillo 3, 15 Carolina Street, Buffalo NY 14201
  • Sat., April 8, 2017 10 AM – 2 PM Matt Urban Hope Center 385 Paderewski Drive, Buffalo, NY, 14212
  • Sat. April 15, 2017 Noon – 3 PM Mount Olive Baptist Church 701 East Delavan Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14215
  • Sat., April 22, 2017 10 AM – 1 PM Say Yes Buffalo Harvey Austin 1405 Sycamore Ave, Buffalo 14211
  • Fri., April 28, 2017 Noon – 2 PM Friendship Baptist Church 402 Clinton Street, Buffalo, NY 14202

In addition to blood pressure screening by UB Nursing students, attendees will visit five additional stations including, Personal Health Survey; Height and Weight, along with education and resources for nutrition and exercise. “Cardiovascular disease which includes heart attacks and strokes is the leading reason for death across our eight Western New York counties, ” said Kenneth Lee Gayles. M.D., Cardiologist, Gayles Medical; and Project Champion, Cardiovascular Disease/Million Hearts®. “The goal really is to control blood pressure, because blood pressure If not treated, can result in people having heart attacks and strokes,” added Priti Bangia, Population Health Manager, Millennium Collaborative Care.

After completing their testing and screenings, a community navigator will also assist attendees with checking their eligibility for Medicaid, as well as help them find a primary care provider if they currently do not have one.

Heart disease and stroke are some of the top leading causes of death in the U.S. Statistics show that every 43 seconds someone has a heart attack in the U.S., as well as 1 American dies every 4 minutes from a stroke, according to millionhearts.hhs.gov. Million Hearts® is a national initiative working to prevent cardiovascular disease among Americans and improve access to proper care. They work to enhance the quality of life by using the ABCS heart health guidelines. These guidelines include, Aspirin when appropriate; Blood pressure control; Cholesterol management; and Smoking cessation.
