BUFFALO — Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant is known for actively pursuing ways to provide affordable housing for area residents, and was pleased to promote and support a PILOT Agreement to convert School 77 into an affordable housing complex.

The historic School 77 building is located at 429 Plymouth Street in Buffalo, and the reconstructed building will create 30 affordable housing units for seniors with incomes at or below 50% of area median income.

Once completed, the building will offer 26 one-bedroom apartments along with 4 two bedroom apartments. Five units will be designed for frail elderly, three units will be accessible for those who are mobility impaired, and two units will be adapted for residents who are hearing or visually impaired. Catholic Charities will be providing both referral and supportive services for the unit’s tenants.

“I believe supporting senior citizens and the underprivileged in our community is of utmost public importance, and I was proud to act in conjunction with the Economic Development Committee to get this Agreement approved,” stated Legislator Grant.

Grant would also add, “I am excited to continue seeing affordable housing projects grow in Buffalo, and I look forward to seeing what the School 77 Project looks like upon completion to mold future housing developments in its image.”

Under the Agreement, the S77 Housing Development Fund will annually pay a sum of money to Erie County and the City of Buffalo for 15 years, with the County receiving 25% and the City receiving 75%.Without the Erie County Legislature’s support of the bill, the development effort would not have been economically feasible under its current structure.
