WILLIAMSVILLE — Playing in its first home match in three weeks, the Niagara University men’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to St. Bonaventure on Sunday. The women’s team also fell to the Bonnies, 4-3.

The men were nipped in two out of the three doubles matches. The No. 3 team of Brent Boleslav and Taylan Ozemir defeated SBU’s John Rutkowski and Guillermo Garcia, 6-4, to give NU a 1-0 advantage. The No. 2 team of Lukas Wenninger and Josh Wilson was edged 7-6 (6). The No. 1 team of Felipe Fuentes and Francis Nadeau battled back to force a tie-breaker, but fell 7-6(2). The Bonnies won in No. 1, 2, and 3 singles to clinch the match. Boleslav won in straight sets for Niagara’s lone victory.

The women rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead. After dropping the doubles point and falling in two singles, Niagara got on the board in No. 3 singles when Sharlee Deshmukh topped Clara Herberts, 7-6, 6-2. Niagara’s No. 1 Stella Peisakhova defeated Mara Martinez in three sets, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5, to tie the match at 2-2. The Purple Eagles took the lead when Sansriti Ranjan beat Dominique Mortier, 6-4, 7-6(7) in four singles. However, SBU won in six singles and squeaked out a win in four singles to clinch the match.

Niagara resumes MAAC play at Monmouth on  April 2 at 10:30 a.m.
