The Canisius softball team dropped a pair of one-run games on Saturday, falling to Cornell 3-2 before losing to host Mount St. Mary’s 6-5 on the first day of the Mount St. Mary’s Invite in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Canisius is now 11-15 on the year.
In the first game of the day, the Golden Griffins held a 2-1 lead after three innings, but Cornell (3-5) scored single runs in the fourth and fifth earn the 3-2 victory. Canisius got on the board first in the home-half of the first inning when sophomore Denver Keller drew a bases-loaded walk. After the Big Red tied the game at 1-1 in the third, Canisius regained the lead at 2-1 thanks to a solo homer by sophomore Lauren Castro, her fourth homer of the season. Cornell knotted the game back up at 2-2 in the fourth and took the lead for good in the fifth inning on an RBI-single by Rebecca Kubena.
The Griffs had six hits in the losing effort, with freshman Morgan Altman recording two hits for the Blue and Gold. Junior Madi Weathers took the loss in the circle for Canisius after she allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits through five innings of work.
In the second game, Canisius led Mount St. Mary’s 2-0 after one inning of play, but the host Mountaineers scored five times in the fourth to hold a 5-2 lead. Canisius cut Mount St. Mary’s lead to 5-4 in the sixth thanks to a sac-fly by freshman Ashley Barnett and an RBI-double by fellow rookie Sydney Kreimann, but the Mount added an insurance marker in the sixth to make the score 6-4 in favor of the home team heading to the seventh.
That insurance run proved to be big for Mount St. Mary’s, as Altman raced home from third on a wild pitch to make the score 6-5 in favor of the home squad. The Griffs ended up leaving the bases loaded in the seventh to drop their third-straight game.
Castro had two hits in the losing effort, while freshman Cassie Ho also had two hits, including her second homer of the season. Castro took the loss for Canisius after she allowed six runs, for of which were earned, on nine hits to go with three walks.
Canisius will close out its trip to Maryland on Sunday when the team plays Morgan State. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m.
