EMITTSBURG, Md. – The University at Buffalo softball team pounded out 13 runs in the second game on Wednesday afternoon as the Bulls split a doubleheader with Mount St. Mary’s. It was a season-high in runs for the Bulls as they won 13-0 in game two. The Mountaineers won the first game 5-3.
The Bulls pounded out 17 hits in the second game, led by a 4-for-4 performance from freshman Gabby Keller, who drove in three.
Neither team scored over the first four innings before they recorded 13 runs over the final three innings, including eight in the top of the seventh. In the fifth, sophomore Ally Power doubled down the right field line to score two and put UB on the board. Buffalo added three more in the sixth on a single up the middle from Keller and a triple to right field from Danielle Lallos, who then came in to score on a wild pitch.
UB broke the game open in the seventh with eight runs, including a three-run home run from Lallos. Keller drove in a pair with a single and senior Essence Savinon drove in a run with a single up the middle. Freshman Ufuoma Ogagan drove in the final two runs of the inning with a single, scoring Power and freshman Jessica Goldyn.
Senior Bobbi Langlois pitched a complete-game shutout as she scattered just five hits over seven innings. In addition to Keller’s 4-for-4 game, Power also had a four-hit afternoon, with two runs batted in. Lallos went 2-for-4 with four RBI’s. Goldyn and Ogagan also had multi-hit games in the blowout victory.
Buffalo got out to the early lead in the first game as well, scoring the first three runs. Freshman Jenelle Martinez tripled home the first run of the game in the third. UB scored two more in the top of the fifth. Martinez scored on a Mount St. Mary’s error and Alyssa Cuevas drove in a run with a double to left field, scoring Keller.
The Bulls continued to lead 3-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Mount St. Mary’s scored five runs to take the lead.
Senior Charlotte Miller picked up the loss as she allowed the five runs, but just two of those were earned. She struck out six in the loss. Martinez went 2-for-4 from the plate in the game.
“I’m very proud of my girls for bouncing back after a heartbreaking loss in game one,” said head coach Trena Peel. “We played great for six innings but, didn’t finish defensively or in the circle. Mount St. Mary’s was a high energy team that never stopped fighting. I’ve been saying that it takes three ingredients to be a successful team: great pitching, timely hitting, and error free defense. In game two we had all three. It was awesome to see Bobbi lead us for seven complete innings in the circle and recorded our second shutout of the year. As a whole we finally played solid defense and had a huge eight-run 7th inning rally. This win is a good way to transition into conference play. I’m hoping this momentum will keep going.”
The Bulls will now return to Western New York to open Mid-American Conference play. Due to unplayable field conditions at Nan Harvey Field, the Bulls will host Ball State in a three-game series at D’Youville College. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1 p.m.
