BUFFALO — On the March episode of “Our Daily Bread,” which airs at 6:30 p.m. and noon Saturday on WKBW, Father Paul D. Seil learns about the Teaching and Restoring Youth (TRY) Program in Buffalo.

The TRY Program has been serving the needs of young women in Buffalo since 1997 and offers a safe, structured environment to women who are homeless and who have been the target of abuse, violence and victimization.  The young women range in age between 16 and 21 and are given access to education, health care, counseling and job training.

Sister Janet DiPasquale, SSJ, executive director of the TRY Program, sees her time with the program as a gift.  “I have had the opportunity to work with a wonderful staff as well as be present to so many courageous young women. Over 350 young girls have entered the TRY Program during my tenure.  They have given so much to me, more than I can give them. I am so honored to work with them.”

In addition to teaching Father Seil about the TRY Program, Sister Janet teaches him her recipe for quick chili while one of the program’s residents, Estefania, shows him how to make beef and potato pastelitos.  Father Seil has a recipe of his own to share, rustic whole wheat raspberry crostata.

During her segment, Estefania talks about how the TRY Program has impacted her.  “I was feeling stressed and alone.  I was feeling like no one could understand the situation I was in.  I am so glad I found the TRY house; I think of it as a new place to start my life.  My advice is, if you are homeless or unhappy with your family situation, just give this place a TRY.”
