BATAVIA — Jackson Elementary School on South Jackson Street has been evacuated due to a nearby fire at an apartment house.
The students, who are all unharmed, were temporarily sent to Sacred Heart Church on Sumner Street and will be bused home beginning at 11:30 a.m. If no one is home, students will be returned to the church.
Officials say that the fire started in a back apartment and then spread to a workshop attached to the building. They say it appears the wind helped spread the fire from one building to another.
