NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman issued a statement calling on U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign over comments he made during his Senate confirmation hearing.

Schneiderman said Sessions statements that he had not met with any Russian contacts during the campaign of Donald Trump for the presidency was “appalling judgment.”

Sessions, for his part, stated on Thursday that he understood the question from Sen. Al Franken to mean did he have any contact with any Russian contacts as a surrogate for Trump. Sessions has since clarified to state that he did have contact as a member of the U.S. Senate Armed Forces Committee.

Schneiderman’s statement follows in its entirety:

“Attorney General Sessions – our nation’s top law enforcement official – appears to have lied under oath, which in and of itself is disqualifying. The fact that he lied about contact with the Russian government, while seeking confirmation to lead the Department of Justice, which is investigating Russia’s involvement in our election, is beyond the pale. This represents appalling judgment by Sessions – and a total disregard for the rule of law and the interests of the American people. For the good of the country, Sessions must immediately resign.”
