HAMDEN. Conn. — The Canisius women’s basketball team started fast and furious in the first quarter, taking a 16-10 lead into the break, however the first-place, Quinnipiac Bobcats bested Canisius, 62-49 in the team’s regular season finale. With the loss Canisius finishes the 2016-17 campaign with a 9-20 overall mark and a 8-12 MAAC record, while The Bobcats finish the regular season with a 24-6 mark and a 17-3 conference record.

The Blue and Gold looked strong in the first frame, going on a 6-0 run after the game was knotted up at 10-10 midway through the first quarter, staking claim to the early lead, however Quinnipiac took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Griffs 19-7, and never looked back.

The Canisius offense was held in check by a stout Bobcat defense, but Saliah Serrette hit double-figures for the Blue and Gold, scoring 12 points, and shooting 4-of-8 from the line and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe.

Sara Hinriksdottir was next on the team in scoring, notching seven points and seven rebounds in the loss.

Quinnipiac had four players in double figures as Sarah Shewan paced the Bobcats with 16 points, while Carly Fabbri (12 points), Aryn McClure (12 points) and Adily Martucci (11 points) all hit double digits.

Even though Canisius narrowly lost the battle of the glass, 39-32, turnovers plagued the team, as the Griffs coughed it up 18 times in the contest. Canisius proved to be more efficient from the floor, shooting 19-of-50 for a 38 percent average, while Quinnipiac was 17-of-53 for a 32.1 percent margin.

The long-range jumper failed the Griffs following the first half, as Canisius was 3-of-6 from beyond the arc in the first half, while the team was shutout (0-of-4) from 3-point land in the second half.

With the loss on Saturday the Griffs have been slotted into the No. 8 seed of the tournament and will be in the No. 8 vs. No. 9 seeded game for the third straight season. Canisius will play Niagara (No. 9) for the second-straight season as well, with the game taking place as the first game of the tournament, on Thursday at 9:30 a.m.
