Norfolk, Va. — The Purple Eagles baseball team heads to Norfolk State for a three-game series with the Spartans. The weekend will include a double-headed on Saturday starting at 1 p.m., while the third game will be played at noon Sunday.

The Purple Eagles met with Baylor on Feb. 17-18 in a three-game series for the teams’ first all-time meeting. The Bears swept the series, winning by scores of 7-3, 6-3 and 21-6. Tanner Kirwer had a team-high five hits, two doubles, four RBIs and one homerun. He also had two runs. Nick Bernick, Joel Brophy and Julian Gallup also each had two runs.

Bernick leads the Purple Eagles at the plate, batting a perfect. 1.000. He also has a team-best 1.500 slugging percentage. Bernick also has two runs, 2 hits and one double. Kirwer leads the team in hits with five, in doubles with two and in homeruns with one. He also has a team-high four RBIs and two stolen bases. Freshman Peter Battaglia is second on the team in hits with four and in RBIs with two. On the mound, Cody Eckerson (0-1) has struck out three batters in 2.0 innings pitched. Alex MacKinnon has a team-high 4.1 innings pitched.

Outfielder Denathan Dukes and infielder Roger Hall have a team-high five runs and catcher Ismael Herrera leads the Spartans with seven hits. Adam Collins, an infielder, leads Norfolk State in RBIs with six. He also has six hits, two doubles and three runs. On the mound, Chase Anderson (1-0) and Alex Mauricio (1-0) have allowed zero runs. Anderson had struck out eight batters in 7.2 innings pitched and Mauricio has struck out nine in 6.0 innings pitched.

The Purple Eagles will compete in the University of Virginia Tournament in Charlottesville, Va. March 3-5. Niagara will face LaSalle on March 3 and 5 and Virginia on March 3 and 4.
