BUFFALO — Canisius head women’s soccer coach Todd Clark announced today that the Golden Griffins have officially added five new players for the 2017 season.

“Finding players that not only have the desire to take Canisius to the next level, but also the recognizable ability to do so, was vital in this class as we seek to move forward after a strong 2016 season,” Calrk said. “In addition to their soccer acumen, they each bring strong character, work rate and academics which is critical for the overall success of student-athletes.”

Maggie Canitia

Midfielder • Hawken School • Chesterland, Ohio

Awards: 2016 NSCAA High School All-American, 2016 First-Team All-Ohio, 2016 All-Region Central States Team, 2016 Chagrin Valley Conference MVP, GCSSCA Player of the Year D3, 2015 Senior Team Captain

Clark’s comments on Canitia: “She has been trained by former professional Benny Dargle, who has consistently produced outstanding players over the years. Maggie is a composed central midfielder who can effectively break up play in the midfield while helping us into the transition.  Tactically and technically, her soccer IQ is going to be immediately apparent on the field. She is also an excellent student and will be a great example of the combination of student-athlete that we seek here at Canisius.”

Bailey Fenwick-Miller

Goalkeeper • St. Mary’s Memorial • St. Mary’s, Ohio

Awards: 2015 and 2016 Team MVP, 2016 first-team all-league, 2016 all-district first-team, 2015 third-team all-league, 2015 all-district honorable mention.

Clark’s comments on Fenwick-Miller: “Her club coach with Ohio Galaxies, Travis Sober, who is currently with Wright State’s staff and formerly captained the Trinidad and Tobago U20 men’s national team, is someone I have a lot of faith in when he suggests someone.  After meeting Bailey and watching her play, it was immediately apparent that she would bring, not only a quiet confidence and focus, but also a strong set of skills and the work rate to continually develop her craft.  Bailey is also active in social organizations and has earned great academic recognition through various organizations, so we expect her to excel both on and off the field in the coming years at Canisius.”

Shauna Lee

Forward • Streetsville Secondary • Mississauga, Ontario

Awards: Two-time team MVP, Team captain in senior year

Clark’s comments on Lee: “I am excited for the impact Shauna can make in our attack.  She is a tremendous athlete with and without the ball that brings things to our team that we will appreciate.  She can run at people as well as anyone and she has the ability to get in behind defenses. We identified her while competing with Toronto Lynx and she played with [future Griff] Emily [Porteous]. She has since switched to Brams United. Both Canadian teams compete at a high level and the training and her experience should translate quickly.”

Emily Porteous

Midfielder • John Cabot Catholic Secondary School • Mississauga, Ontario

Awards: 2015 team MVP, 2016 team captain

Clark’s comments on Porteous: “She originally played with Shauna [Lee] and we discovered them with the Toronto Lynx.  She is an aggressive player with the physicality, as well as skill that will help us strengthen the defensive side of our team in the midfield while still maintaining our attacking options.  In addition to soccer and strong academics, she also plays volleyball, so her athleticism will be immediately apparent for us.”

Amanda Wisbeck

Midfield • Shanghai American School/Hong Kong International School • Älmhult, Sweden

Awards: 2015 All-Tournament Team, Two-time Asia Pacific Activity Conference champion

Clark’s comments on Wisbeck: “Amanda is a very unique recruit for us, as she is from Sweden but currently lives in Hong Kong.  As a result, she not only brings exciting soccer ability to our team, but a world-view that we will all benefit from here at Canisius.  She is quality athlete with that special ability to favor her left foot, and that can add another dimension to any team. With her father having played the game professionally in Sweden, she has truly grown up with a strong soccer background that adds a dimension to her game that will translate well and give us another weapon in 2017.  She also played rugby while playing her club soccer with the Hong Kong Football Club.”

Canisius went 8-9-0 overall and 6-4-0 in MAAC play last year, which qualified the team for the 2016 MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship tournament.
