Canisius women’s basketball had a slim two point lead headed into the fourth quarter on Saturday afteroon, but Siena outscored the Griffs 31-19 in the final frame, to secure the 77-67 victory. With the loss the Blue and Gold fall to 9-18 and 8-10 in the MAAC, while Siena improves to 12-15 and 11-7 in conference action.
As was the case in the first matchup earlier in the year, turnovers proved to be a deciding factory, as the Griffs coughed it up 20 times in the four quarters, however sharpshooting in the first three quarters helped offset the damage.
The offense went cold when it mattered most, as Canisius shot just 2-of-11 from the field and 0-of-6 from three in the final 10 minutes. On the other hand, Siena turned up the heat on offense, hitting 9-of-12 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Sara Hinriksdottir proved to be the offensive catalyst for Canisius, scoring three-point shy of her career-best, with 26 points. She was also one rebound she of her second career double-double, with nine boards.
The other half of team Iceland, was impressive too, scoring 15 points, including a pair of treys. Senior Lauren D’Hont also hit double-figures with 10 on the team’s Senior Day.
Siena was led by Jackie Benitez who poured in 24 points in the game. Benitez succeeded with the law of averages, hitting 9-of-24 and 6-of-16 beyond the arc. Kollyns Scarbrough (20 points) and and Meghan Donohue (12 points) also hit double-figures.
The Griffs turnover issues started in the front lines as three of its starters combined 15 turnovers, while Siena only coughed it up 12 times and recorded 10 steals in the game.
The Griffs take to the road one final time in the regular season, looking to improve its standing in the conference, with road contests against Fairfield on Feb. 23 and Quinnipiac on Feb. 25. Game times are 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.
