SYRACUSE — Junior Erica Evans recorded three goals as the Canisius women’s lacrosse team lost to No. 5 Syracuse 18-6 Saturday afternoon from the Carrier Dome.

The Orange got off to a fast start, taking a 5-0 lead over the Griffs in the first 10:46 of the contest, with Evans netting the first goal for Canisius at 17:33. After the Golden Griffin goal, the Orange would score three unanswered for an 8-1 lead before junior Jen Reininger scored at 8:27 to cut the lead to six. To close the half, Syracuse would go on a 2-1 run to take a 10-3 lead into the half.

Syracuse continued its strong play in the second half, going on an 8-0 run through the first 22:09, for an 18-3 lead. The Griffs would add three late goals over the final 5:43 of the contest, with goals from freshman Bryar Cummings, senior Ashley Bull and Evans.

Canisius junior goalkeeper Rebecca VanLaeken made 14 saves in the loss, while Syracuse goalie Asa Goldstock made three saves in her second victory of the season.

With the loss, the Griffs record now sits at 1-2 overall, while Syracuse is moves to a perfect 2-0.

The Griffs will head home to the Demske Sports Complex to host Columbia Saturday, Feb. 25, at 1 p.m. The game marks the first of six home games for the Blue and Gold in 2017.
