BUFFALO — The Canisius women’s basketball team tallied a win in the back-half of  its season-series with Saint Peter’s on Thursday, as the Griffs defeated the Peacocks, 61-56 at the Koessler Athletic Center. The win secures the season-sweep for the Blue and Gold, as Canisius improves to 9-17 overall and 8-9 in conference action, while Saint Peter’s drops to 3-23 and 2-15 in conference action.

After a tight first half the Griffs began to pull away in the third and fourth quarters, pushing its lead out to a game-high 16 point advantage with just 3:58 left in the fourth quarter.

Saint Peter’s took advantage of late turnovers but Canisius hang on for the 61-56, victory.

The Griffs most consistent player, Sara Hinriksdottir, led the team offensively, notching 17 points and chipping in five rebounds and one assist for the complete effort.

Canisius got its support players going as well with four players reaching double-figures. Margret Halfdanardottir and Lauren D’Hont  both notched 13 points apiece, while Maria Welch also hit double-digits with 11 points.

For an offense that struggled with efficiency, Zoe Pero, who did nearly half of her damage from the free throw line, shooting 8-of-8 from the charity stripe, led the Peacocks, with 18 points.

Talah Hughes and Sajanna Bethea also reached-double-figures. Hughes scored 14 points, while Bethea tallied a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Despite losing the rebounding battle (43-26), the Canisius defense was still able to limit the Saint Peter’s offense to just 31.5 percent from the field. The Peacocks also shot just 21.1 percent from beyond the arc.

Canisius also did a better job at protecting the basketball, coughing it up just nine times, compared to the Peacocks 13 turnovers.

Canisius returns to action for its final home game on Saturday, as the squad looks for the season-split against Siena at the Koessler Athletic Center. Canisius also celebrates the careers of its three seniors, Emily Weber, Lauren D’Hont and Tamara Miskovic. Game time is set for 2 p.m., with the pregame ceremony beginning approximately 10-15 minutes before the tip.
