Canisius sophomore Lauren Castro and junior Madi Weathers were named the MAAC’s Offensive Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, after the Golden Griffins opened the 2017 season last weekend with a 2-2 record at the CSU Dome Invite in Cleveland, Ohio.

Castro hit a team-best .545 (6-for-11) with four doubles and two runs scored for Canisius, as the team earned victories over Cleveland State and Robert Morris Feb. 11 to open the season. The Gilroy, California native had two multi-hit games, highlighted by her 3-for-3 effort in the 5-2 win over Robert Morris where she had a double and a run scored. In the loss to Bowling Green Feb. 12, Castro had both of the team’s hits with a pair of doubles.

In the circle, Castro went 1-1 with eight strikeouts and a 2.10 ERA in 10 innings of work. Her win came in the team’s victory over Robert Morris, where she allowed two runs on six hits while walking three and fanning four.

Weathers earned a pair of saves on the first weekend of the regular-season, doubling her career saves total to four. She allowed one hit and struck out three to earn a save in the Griffs’ season-opening victory over Cleveland State Feb. 11, and then she came back in the nightcap and pitched a perfect inning of relief to help Canisius move to 2-0 on the year for the first time since 2011.

Canisius will return to action this weekend with a trip to Charlotte, North Carolina, where the Blue and Gold will take part in the First Pitch Classic, hosted by Charlotte. Canisius will play Bowling Green Friday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m., before taking on long-time rival St. Bonaventure Friday at 12:15 p.m.
