LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — The Canisius women’s basketball team brought a two-point lead in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s contest against Rider, however the Broncs broke loose in the final frame outscoring the Blue and Gold 29-16 en route to a 61-50 win. With the loss Canisius drops to 8-18 overall and 7-9 in the MAAC, while Rider improves to 19-6 and 13-3 in conference action.
It appeared Canisius was in control of the contest, heading to halftime up 18-17, and continued that trend, with its 34-32 lead headed into the fourth, however the final quarter surge was too much for the Blue and Gold.
Sara Hinriksdottir was the team’s biggest threat on the court, as the Keflavic, Iceland native recorded the first double-double of her career, with 20 points and 12 rebounds, to lead the team in both categories.
Sarah Cooley broke out in the contest as well, notching 12 points and going 2-of-5 from beyond the arc. She also added five rebounds to her total.
Rider still managed offense despite the absence of its leading point producer, Robin Perkins, as Kamila Hoskova paced the team with 18 points, and Stella Johnson scored 13.
Julia Duggan almost followed Hinrikdottir’s suit, just missing out on a double-double with 11 rebounds and nine ponts.
Neither team was able to find much offensive rhythm throughout the contest, as the Broncs shot 36.2 percent for the game, while the Blue and Gold were slightly lower with a mark of 32.8.
Defenisve statistics were nearly identical with the Griffs turning it over one more time than the Broncs (13-12) and Rider took down one more board than the Canisius (39-38).
The deciding statistic proved to be that of the numbers beyond the arc, as Rider shot 42.9 percent from long range hitting 6-of-14, while the Griffs came up cold from 3-point land shooting just 21 percent and hitting just 4-of-19.
The Griffs enter the final home week of the season, as the squad hosts Saint Peter’s on Thursday in its annual Play4Kay game, followed by Siena on Saturday for its senior day. Game times are set for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively. Following the pair of home games, Canisius will finish the season on the road at Fairfield on Feb. 23, and Quinnipiac on Feb. 25.
