The Canisius women’s basketball team finishes up its two-game week, with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee against Fairfield on Sunday. It’s the first time these two teams will meet this season.

The Griffs bounced back from a tough loss against Monmouth with a strong performance in on Wednesday, as the Blue and Gold downed rival Niagara 65-57. It was the sixth-straight regular season win against Niagara, and was the third-straight win in Lewiston. Canisius was led by its Icelandic tandem of Sara Hinriksdottir and Margret Halfdanardottir. The duo combined for 37 of the teams 65 points. Hinriskdottir paced the team with 22 points and six rebounds, while Halfdanardottir scored 15 and was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. The Griffs also had two other players reach double-figures as Saliah Serrette posted 11 points and Maria Welch hit 10 in the win. Tamara Miskovic put in yeoman’s work as well, recording a new career-high in rebounds with eight and dished out three assists.

Coming into the game on Sunday, Canisius is 5-13 and 4-5 in MAAC play. Hinriksdottir leads the team with 15.2 points, Halfdanardottir (10.3) and Lauren D’Hont (10.1) also average double-digits. After defeating Niagara in the final showdown of the 2015-16 season, women’s basketball helped clinch the sixth-straight canal cup. It is the eighth time in 10 years the Griffs have defeated Niagara in the Battle of the Bridge. Canisius currently holds a 9-3 lead in the points this season after defeating the Purple Eagles up in Lewiston on Feb. 18. The Battle of the Bridge is an all-sports competition between the schools. Points are awarded for all regular-season, conference match-ups, except for cross country, swimming and diving and golf where the points are awarded based on results in the MAAC Championship. Niagara’s only wins came in the inaugural competition in 2006-07 and also won in 2009-10.
