The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team won five of the six singles matches on Sunday against Brown, defeating the Bears, 5-2. The victory was UB’s first of the spring season as they wrapped up their three-match tour of the Ivy League this week.

For the first time this season the Bulls dropped the doubles point as they picked up one win at third doubles with a 6-1 victory from Ethan Nittolo and Tony Miller.

The Bulls dominated the singles action though, winning five of the six matches, including four of those in straight sets.  Vidit Vaghela picked up an easy victory at one as he won the first set 6-0 before his opponent retired just one game into the second set.  Hao Sheng Koay won his match at third singles as he overcame a first set loss to win, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Petr Vodak picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at fourth singles and Villhelm Fridell won at fifth singles, 6-1, 6-4.  Nittolo won at sixth singles, 7-6, 6-4.

“This weekend was a learning experience for us, and I am pleased we made adjustments with our energy to carry us to victory today,” said head coach Lee Nickell. “In our matches against Cornell and Yale we didn’t maintain our energy after doubles and we certainly feel the we could have left more on the table. Today we made a point to have the best energy even after losing a tight doubles point and it made all the difference. This young team is exceptionally talented at tennis, and I am hoping this weekend has taught them that bringing energy every day is a talent too.”

The Bulls will be back in action during the first weekend of February when they visit another Ivy League opponent on Feb. 4 in Columbia.
