YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Niagara Purple Eagles men’s and women’s tennis teams began their spring season competing against the Youngstown State Penguins on Friday night.

Taylan Ozdemir picked up Niagara’s lone win in the match. Ozdemir edged Thomas Rodrigues in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8. Ozdemir improved to 2-0 in dual matches and 7-5 overall this season.

On the women’s side, the No. 2 doubles team of Sharlee Deshmukh and Shannon Wong won three points in their match, while Stella Peisakhova and Sansriti Ranjan lost close matches in singles.

The Niagara men are back in action on Feb. 11 to play Oberlin College and Cleveland State in Cleveland. The Niagara women’s next match will be against Akron in St. Bonaventure on Feb. 4.
