NIAGARA UNIV. — The Purple Eagles women’s basketball team fell to Fairfield, 65-55, on Friday night at the Gallagher Center.

The Purple Eagles and the Stags kept things close the majority of the game. In the first quarter, threes from Maggie McIntyre and Jamie Sherburne helped the Purple Eagles to a 12-12 tie with Fairfield going into the second quarter. In the second quarter, Fairfield took the lead but six consecutive points from Tiffany Corselli tied things up once again, 26-26, with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter. However, the Stags snatched back the lead and led 30-28 going into halftime. A jumper from Rampado with 8:27 left in the third quarter put Niagara ahead, 33-32, but the Stags pulled away once again and led 46-41 going into the final quarter. The Purple Eagles remained persistent in the fourth as six points from Rampado brought them back within one point of the lead, 48-47, with a little over eight minutes remaining to play. But Fairfield would bar the Purple Eagles’ comeback, going on an 11-0 run over the next four minutes. Despite six points from Stroemple in the final minute and a half, the Stags came away with the victory.

The Purple Eagles head to Connecticut to take on Quinnipiac on Thursday and Fairfield on Jan. 29.
