NIAGARA UNIV. — The Canisius swimming & diving program will travel this Saturday to face its Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara University from the Kiernan Center.

The Golden Griffins will look to continue their success over Niagara in recent years, as they have swept the Purple Eagles in five consecutive seasons. In last year’s meeting the Griffs won 189-98 in women’s play and narrowly gained a victory on the men’s side 154-147. In the sweep, eight athletes on the current roster won multiple individual events.

The 2016-17 Griffs have swept their last two meets, with the most recent coming last weekend against Gannon University (M: 111-91 – W: 117-77). The Blue and Gold were led by junior Rebecca Anthone who won three individual events (100, 500 & 1000 freestyle), while junior Greg Staebell (400 IM, 200 backstroke) and sophomore James Pokornowski (500, 1000 freestyle) also won multiple events.

The meet against Niagara will mark the end of the regular season for the swim team, with the divers taking part in the Fredonia Diving Invite next weekend.

Both teams will then prepare for the 2017 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships, which run from Feb. 8 – 11 at the Burt Flickinger Center.
