Canisius sophomore Siobhan Quinn set a school record in the mile event as the Golden Griffins competed in their first race of the indoor track season Saturday afternoon at the RIT Invitational.

“The athletes responded well today and were fairly sharp for our first meet of the season,” said head coach Nate Huckle. “We controlled most of the distance events up front, and set ourselves up well for next weekend at Cornell. For the men, Anthony Belfatto and Marcus Brown represented the freshman class well with wins in the 3k and 800 meter events. Jeff Antolos and cooper roach also posted nice wins in the collegiate division.

“Siobhan Quinn picked up where she left off in cross country, winning the mile in a school record. Carlin Sullivan also raced very well to take third. The women’s 3k was a great showing for us as well, with Cat Niederpruem posting her first collegiate win.”

Quinn placed first in the one mile event completing finishing with a time of 5:09.97, while Sullivan finished the race in 5:11.99 to take third place.

Niederpuem won the 3k event with a time 10:55.99, while the Blue and Gold took the top four slots in the race with Anna Phillips, Macey Walker and Aileen Doyle finishing two through four respectively.

For the men, freshman Brown won the 800 meter with a time 2:01.22, while sophomore Josh Sopchak (2:01.34) and senior A.J. Stuver (2:01.43) finished close behind to get the top three places.

Other winners for the men included Belfatto who finished the 3k event in 9:29.00, with sophomore teammate Brandon Williams placing second at 9:29.23. And senior Jeff Antolos who won the one mile event at 4:19.76 (ECAC qualifier).

The Griffs will look to continue their success next week as they travel to Ithaca to take part in the Upstate Challenge.
