WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. — The Canisius women’s basketball team wraps up its two-game weekend as the squad takes on Monmouth on Sunday. Game time is set for 2 p.m. and will be aired on ESPN3.
Canisius snapped its two-game losing skid with a win over Saint Peter’s on Friday. The Griffs overcame a first-half deficit, outscoring the Peacocks, 39-28, led by the offensive prowess of Sara Hinriksdottir. Hinriksdottir scored 13 of her 19 points in the final two quarters as she led the team with 19. Lauren D’Hont also had a large hand in the Griffs second-half surge, scoring 13 points, as she was the only other Griff to hit double-figures. Hinriksdottir’s solid day spanned past her points as she led the team in rebounds with eight and assists with four. Canisius enters the contest with a 4-12 overall record and a 3-4 MAAC mark. Hinriksdottir and D’Hont both average double-figures as the sophomore is pacing the team with 14.9 points per game and 5.3 rebounds, while D’Hont is scoring at 10.9 points per game clip. Tamara Miskovic leads the team in assists per game with a 2.9 mark. As a team the Blue and Gold is averaging 61.6 points per game, while opponents are tallying 69.0 points per contest. Canisius is taking down 31.9 rebounds per game, however its foes are recording boards at higher clip, averaging 39.6. Turnovers have also been a point of emphasis, as the Blue and Gold are turning it over 16.0 times per game while opponents are giving it away 14.0 times per match up. In conference action, the Griffs have posted better numbers. The Blue and Gold holding an even scoring margin a positive scoring margin (63.4-62.9) and a much closer rebounding deficit than their overall stats, trailing 31.7 to 35.1. The offense during conference action has run better, as the Griffs have three players averaging double-figures in MAAC play (Hinriskdottir 15.9, Halfdanardottir 11.0, Serrette 10.7).
The Hawks have a 7-8 overall record and a 2-4 conference mark. Since reopening MAAC play, the Hawks have had an up-and-down go of it, splitting its last four conference contests, defeating Marist (79-69) and Saint Peter’s (76-59), but falling to Fairfield (71-68) and Siena (85-76). Kayla Shaw paces the team in points per game with a mark of 12.1. Tyese Purvis also averages doublel-figures with a mark of 11.8. Christina Mitchell patrols the glass for the Hawks, leading the team with 6.7 rebounds per contest. Alaina Jarnot runs the offense averaging four helpers per game. The Hawks are averaging 67.1 points per game, while the team is giving up 67.4 points to opponents. Rebounding has been a strength for Monmouth, taking down 41.2 boards per game and opponents are coming up with 39.9 rebounds per game.
With its win in the opening MAAC weekend this season, the Griffs have evened the all-time series to 4-4. The win halted a win streak consisting of three-straight wins after, beginning when Monmouth ousted Canisius from the MAAC tournament. Previous to that game Canisius won two of the first three games the two teams played. |Canisius did hold a three-game winning streak earlier in the all-time history. All five contests have come under head coach Terry Zeh, with the team holding a 3-1 mark at home, a 1-2 record on the road and an 0-1 mark in the MAAC tournament. In the first game of the season between the two squads, Canisius bested Monmouth 74-54 at the Koessler Athletic Center.
