Sara Hinriksdottir’s 19 point effort, and a strong second half helped lead the Canisius women’s basketball past the Saint Peter’s Peacocks, 59-54, in Jersey City, N.J. Canisius outscored Saint Peter’s 39-28 in the final two quarters to sprint to the victory. With the win, Canisius improved to 4-12 and 3-4 in MAAC play. Saint Peter’s dropped to 3-13 and 2-5 in conference action.

After trailing by 10 early in the second quarter, the Blue and Gold battled the Peacocks throughout the matchup, taking its first lead with 3:59 left in the third quarter. Following the lead-giving bucket by Margret Halfdanardottir, Canisius didn’t trail the rest of the way.

Hinriksdottir took over the second half, scoring 13 of her 19 points in the final two quarters. She also took down eight boards and dished out four assists in the victory. She shot 50 percent of the field, proving to be accurate in the paint.

Lauren D’Hont also hit double-figures in the game, notching 13 points in the victory.

Saint Peter’s was led by Talah Hughes who scored 14 points, and just missed out on a double-double with 9 points, while Janelle Mullen scored 12 points in the loss.

SPU had a slight edge in the battle of the glass, coming down with 32 rebounds, to Canisius’ 30. Meanwhile both teams turned it over 13 times.

The difference in the game was the Griffs’ stout defense that held the Peacocks to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field, while Canisius rebounded from a slow first half, to shoot 52.2 percent in the final two quarters to finish the game with a 43.8 mark.

With the win the Griffs improve the all-time series to 30-29. Canisius has now won eight-straight games against the Peacocks and nine of its last 10. Sara Hinriskdottir continues to spark the offense and hit double-figures for the 14th time in 16 tries this season. Earlier in the year Hinriskdottir went nine-straight games with double-digit points, but had that streak ended. She has now started a new trend of going five-straight double-figures.

Canisius has its first conference rematch of the season coming up on Sunday, as the squad takes on Monmouth, in West Long Branch, N.J. on Sunday. Game time is set for 2 p.m., as the Blue and Gold look for the first season sweep of the Hawks ever in the all-time series.
