NEW ROCHELLE — The Niagara University women’s basketball team heads to the Hynes Athletic Center at 7 p.m. Friday to take on the Iona Gaels.
The Purple Eagles dropped a last-second heartbreaker, 60-58, to the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday. Victoria Rampado led the Purple Eagles in scoring with 20 points. She also brought down 11 rebounds to record her fifth double-double of the season. Rampado has scored 20 or more points in seven games this season and has had double digit rebounds in five games. Kaylee Stroemple led the Purple Eagles in rebounding with a season-high 12 rebounds, which also tied her career-high. She added 13 points to record her first double-double of the season. Jamie Sherburne had a team-best and season-high six assists and Tiffany Corselli recorded her second career block.
Redshirt-junior forward Rampado leads the Purple Eagles in scoring with 16.3 points per game and in rebounding with 8.4 rebounds per game. Rampado leads the MAAC in rebounding and is second in scoring. Junior forward Stroemple and senior guard Corselli also average in double figure scoring. Stroemple averages 12.4 points per game and Corselli averages 10.1 points per game. Stroemple has the second-best field goal percentage in the MAAC; she is 74-for-133 for a percentage of 55.6. Freshman guard Morgan Baughman is fourth in the MAAC in 3-point field goal percentage (41.4%). Niagara leads the MAAC in 3-point field goal percentage; the team is 93-for-266 (35.0%).
Sophomore guard Alexis Lewis leads the Gaels in scoring with 17.7 points per game and in rebounding with 7.5 rebounds per game. Lewis leads the MAAC in scoring and is fourth in rebounding. She is also second in the MAAC in blocked shots with 1.7 blocks per game. Marina Lizarazu, a senior guard, averages a team-best 3.9 assists per game and 2.5 steals per game. She is second in the MAAC in assists and ranks fourth in steals. Senior forward Karynda DuPree if fifth in the MAAC in field goal percentage (53.7%). Iona is fourth in the MAAC in field goal percentage; the team is 337-for-845 for a percentage of 39.9. The Gaels rank fifth in the MAAC in steals, averaging 7.9 steals per game.
Niagara heads to Manhattan on Sunday and then returns home on Jan. 18 when they host Canisius for the teams’ first Battle of the Bridge game of the season.
