The Canisius softball team will officially open the 38th season in program history Saturday, Feb. 11, when the Golden Griffins travel to Cleveland to take part in the CSU Dome Invite. In all, Canisius is scheduled to play three teams that advanced to the 2016 NCAA Division I Softball Championship, highlighted by a neutral-site game against Florida State, a program that advanced to the Women’s College World Series last June.

After taking a year off, the Griffs will return to the CSU Dome Invite to open the year, the program’s fourth trip to the event in the last five seasons. Canisius will meet host Cleveland State Friday, Feb. 11 at 10:30 a.m., to open the year, and the Blue and Gold will also play Robert Morris and Bowling Green in the first tournament on the schedule The following weekend, the Blue and Gold will head south to Charlotte, North Carolina to play in the First Pitch Classic. There, Canisius will face Bowling Green, local-rival St. Bonaventure and the host Charlotte 49ers, with two other games to be announced as the tournament progresses.

After a week off, Canisius will travel to South Carolina to take part in the Upstate Classic March 3-4. The following weekend will feature a trip to the Under Armour Showcase in Tampa, Florida, where the Griffs will play games against Butler, Holy Cross, South Dakota and La Salle. On March 15, the Griffs will play a split doubleheader at FGCU where the team will face Florida State and FGCU. The meeting with the Seminoles, a team that went 55-10 overall and 21-2 in ACC play last year, will be the first in program history.

After playing in the Battle of the Beach in Fort Myers, Fla. (March 17-18) and the Mount St. Mary’s Invite in Emmitsburg, Maryland (March 25-26), the Griffs will open their home slate March 29 when the team plays cross-town rival Buffalo in a doubleheader at the Demske Sports Complex. First pitch of that twinbill is set for 4 p.m.

The Griffs will open MAAC play at Fairfield April 1, and then the squad will play its MAAC home-opener April 8 when Manhattan comes to town. The Manhattan series starts a six-game homestand which features visits by Saint Peter’s (April 9) and Syracuse (April 12). After a road trip that features seven road games from April 15-23, the Griffs will close out the regular-season with four doubleheaders at home, starting April 26 against St. Bonaventure and ending Sunday, May 7, when Canisius hosts long-time rival Niagara on the final day of the season.

The 2017 MAAC Softball Championship will be hosted at the home site of the league’s regular-season champion. Canisius advanced to the conference tournament last May after the Blue and Gold went 23-32 overall and 13-7 in conference games. This year’s league championship will be held May 10-14.

Canisius returns six regular starters and three pitchers from the 2016 roster.
