The Canisius women’s basketball team opened up 2017 with a road victory over Manhattan on Monday afternoon, shooting 50 percent from the field and using a 22-point second quarter to catapult the team to victory, 62-57. With the victory the Blue and Gold improve to 3-10 overall and 2-2 in MAAC play, while the Jaspers drop to 5-8 overall and 1-3 in conference action.
The Blue and Gold used a strong second-half to put distance between itself and Manhattan, opening the fourth quarter with a Sara Hinriksdottir trey to give the Griffs a 10 point lead (52-42). The Canisius defense helped secure the lead, holding the Jaspers to just 36.4 percent in the final frame, as Manhattan was just 4-of-11 from the floor in the final stanza.
Hinriksdottir once again led the offense, scoring 20 points to go along with seven rebounds and one assist. Margret Halfdanardottir and Lauren D’Hont also aided the Griffs effort, as each scored 12 points.
Manhattan was bolstered by the performance of Nyasha Irizarry, who notched 18 points to lead the Jaspers. Kayla Grimme and Amani Tatum also hit double-figures, as Grimme scored 16 points and Tatum recorded 12.
Manhattan edged the Griffs in several categories, taking down more rebounds, 33-27, and turning it over one less time than the Blue and Gold, 18-17. However the key statistic turned out to be shot accuracy.
Canisius outgunned the Manhattan offense, which shot 39.3 percent total, but was just 9-of-27 in the final two quarters.
The Griffs on the other hand shot above 40 percent for the entire game, hitting 54.2 percent of its shots form the field, and 45.5 in the final two frames.
The Blue and Gold now come home for a pair of home contests this coming week, taking on Marist for is annual Kids Day on Thursday, before hosting Quinnipiac on Saturday. Game times are set for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
