The Canisius College women’s basketball team continues its five-game road swing on Monday, as the squad heads to Morehead, Ky., to take on the Eagles at Johnson Arena at 5:15 p.m.
In it’s latest contest, the Blue and Gold attempted to play the role of spoiler, when the squad traveled to Columbus, Ohio and took on the No. 12 team in the country, Ohio State. Canisius started off strong, holding a lead early in the contest, but the Buckeyes ended the first quarter on a 22-7 run to get to the break up 31-18, and the squad never looked back, winning 89-56.
For the eighth straight-game sophomore Sara Hinriksdottir led the team in scoring, reaching 14 points. Canisius had four players total double-digits, as Sarah Cooley (11 points), Margret Halfdanardottir (10 points) and Lauren D’Hont (10 points) joined Hinriksdottir. Hinriksdottir maintains the team lead in points per game, averaging 14, with D’Hont’s 11.6 points per game, ranking second. Aside from being second on the team in points, D’Hont is the team leader in rebounds per game, taking down 5.2 rebounds per contest. Canisius has four players that have registered 20-or-more assists this season, with Hinriksdottir and Halfdanardottir both leading the way with 26. Also hitting 20-or-more assists so far this season is Tamara Miskovic (21) and D’Hont (20). As a team the Blue and Gold is averaging 63.8 points per game, while opponents are scoring 72.4
•Rebounding is an area that the team is working to improve, averaging 33.1 per game, while opponents average 42.6.
Morehead State (9-3) owns its best record through the season’s first 12 games since starting 11-1 in 2001-02. Morehead State has won four games in a row for the first time since 2010-11, when the Eagles recorded five straight victories. Brooke Todd ranks third in NCAA Division I in blocked shots (40) and sixth in blocked shots per game (3.33). Morehead State ranks third in blocked shots (78), seventh in three-point field goal defense (23.5), 10th in blocked shots per game (6.5), and 10th in field goal percentage defense (32.7).
