COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Canisius women’s basketball team dropped an afternoon contest against No. 12 Ohio State on Sunday, as the Buckeyes bested the Griffs, 89-56 at Value City Arena. With the loss the Blue and Gold falls to 2-7 overall, while Ohio State improves to 8-3.

Canisius held its own early in the contest, leading the Buckeyes by two points with 5:48 left in the first frame, but the ranked-foe turned the tide and led for the rest of the contest, on the way to its eighth victory of the year.

The Buckeye’s Kelsey Mitchell was the games’ leading scorer, as she posted 19 points. Likewise Tori McCoy proved to be productive for Ohio State, recording the games’ only double-double, registering 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Blue and Gold had four-players in double-figures, led by sophomore Sara Hinriksdottir, who continues her strong season. Hinriksdottir hit double-digits for the seventh-straight game, and paced the team with 14 points and three assists.

Joining Hinriksdottir was Sarah Cooley (11 points), Margret Halfdanardottir (10 points) and Lauren D’Hont (10 points).

The battle of the glass was won by the more sizable Buckeyes, as Ohio State took down 45 rebounds to the Griffs’ 34.

Turnovers also proved to be problematic for Canisius, as the Griffs turned it over 21 times, while OSU coughed it up 13 times.

Canisius continues its road swing coming up on Dec. 19. The squad heads to Morehead, Ky., giving Sarah Cooley an opportunity to play in front of friends and family. Game time is slated for 5:15.
