A special weather statement from the National Weather Service in Buffalo warns that “road conditions will rapidly deteriorate early this evening” in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, Wayne and Wyoming counties.

The statement says, “steady light snow will continue through the evening across all of Western New York, the Genesee Valley, and western Finger Lakes. Sunlight filtering through the clouds is allowing much of this to melt on contact with paved surfaces. This will rapidly change during the late afternoon and early evening as pavement temperatures drop with sunset.”

It continues, “water on untreated surfaces will freeze with snow also beginning to accumulate. This will result in untreated roads becoming snow covered and extremely slippery during the late afternoon and early evening. Motorists should be prepared for rapidly deteriorating
road conditions between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.”
