BUFFALO — Drew Weigman stopped all 36 shots he faced and visiting Cortland scored three times in the third period, including two into the empty net, to upset No. 10 Buffalo State 3-0 tonight in a SUNYAC battle.

Buffalo State controlled the bulk of play in the opening period, outshooting the Red Dragons 15-8, but could not convert on a pair of power-play chances. Cortland applied some pressure in the second with a pair of power plays, outshooting the Bengals 15-9 for the period, but neither team could break through. The Red Dragons went back on the power play early in the third period after the Bengals were whistled for too many men on the ice and score off the ensuing faceoff on a deflection on a shot from the point. Buffalo State continued to create chances, but could not solve Weigman, and Cortland added a pair of empty-net goals to seal the win. Mike DeLaVergne (Pawling, NY/Pawling) stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced. The Bengals finished with a 36-32 edge in shots, but were 0 for 5 on the power play while Cortland was 1 for 4.

Sean Perichak scored Cortland’s first goal, and Connor Beck and Tommy Nolan tallied empty-netters.

Buffalo State will host the No. 1-ranked team in the nation Oswego at 7 p.m. Saturday. for its final game before the New Year.
