The Canisius women’s basketball offense was full throttle in the first half of Sunday’s game, coming up four-points shy of the program record for points in a half, outscoring Monmouth, 46-36. The strong first-half helped propel the Griffs to a 74-54 victory over the Hawks, giving the Blue and Gold its first conference win of the season. With the victory Canisius is 2-5 and 1-1 in MAAC play, while Monmouth drops to 2-5 and 0-2 in conference.
Canisius was led by its Icelandic tandem, as Sara Hinriksdottir and Margret Halfdanardottir posted 17 points and 16, points respectively. Hinriksdottir was flirting with a double-double, as she took down seven rebounds to lead the team.
Also putting forth a strong effort was Saliah Serrette who recorded double-figures for the second-straight matchup, tallying 15 points and five rebounds in the win.
The Canisius defense smothered the Monmouth offense, holding the Hawks to just 30.1 percent from the field, and just 15 percent from three-point land. The Hawks had just one player record double figures, with Tayler Nason, notching a career-best 11 points against the Griffs.
Canisius outrebounded its opponent for the second-straight game, shoring up what had been a defensive deficiency earlier in the year, taking down 44 boards to Monmouth’s 38.
The Griffs offense excelled at moving the ball around and keeping the Monmouth defense on its toes and the numbers showed it. The Blue and Gold posted 23 assists in the game, with Halfdanardottir leading the way with six.
Canisius wraps up its five-game homestand on Thursday, when the Griffs host the defending MAC champions, Buffalo. The cross-town rivalry begins at 7 p.m. on Dec. 8. Canisius then heads out on a five-game road swing and won’t play another game at the KAC until the New Year.
