BUFFALO — University at Buffalo wrestler James Benjamin was named the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week after an upset win at the Grapple at the Garden, the league announced on Thursday.

Benjamin scored one of the biggest upsets at the Grapple at the Garden when he took down No. 4-ranked Brett Harner of Princeton in the 197 finals. After falling behind early, Benjamin battled back to take the match to overtime. In OT, the senior turned Harner’s first and only leg attack of the period into the winning takedown to get the 7-5 upset.

Benjamin was also named the FloWrestler of the Week for his win.

The senior grappler is off to a fantastic start to the season. The Vestal, NY native is 7-1 on the year, including a 2-0 mark in dual matches. Benjamin’s other dual win was a 4-3 decision over Ben Honis of 7th-ranked Cornell on November 19. In addition, Benjamin took home the title at the New York State Intercollegiate Championships.

Benjamin is currently ranked 17th in the national rankings.

The Bulls have their first conference dual of the season on Sunday when they travel to Ohio.
