ALFRED — Buffalo State cruised to its fourth-consecutive victory to open the season tonight, defeating host Alfred University, 95-77, in a non-conference contest.

Lovell Smith (Buffalo/McKinley) led four Bengals scoring in double-figures with 22 points on 10 of 17 shooting from the field. Nico McLean (Buffalo/Amherst) added 20 points and 11 assists to go with five steals. Mike Henry (Syracuse/West Genesee) chipped in 17 points and seven rebounds, and Jordan Chateau (Bayside/Lowell) had 10 points and eight boards. Buffalo State used a late surge to take a 40-27 lead into the intermission and never looked back. The Bengals stretched the lead to 25 at 80-55 with eight minutes remaining and coasted to the victory.

Buffalo State shot 53 percent for the game from the field.  The Saxons outscored the Bengals 30-15 from 3-point range to attempt to remain in the game, but the Bengals forced 19 turnovers, while committing just seven.  The discrepancy led to the Bengals attempting 13 more field goals than Alfred. Alfred could not answer the Bengals’ speed, evident by Buffalo State producing 16 steals, compared to just one by the Saxons.
