BUFFALO — The Buffalo Sabres went into Wednesday night’s game looking for their third win in a row. A third-period goal by team captain Brian Gionta nearly made that possible.

Gustav Nyquist started the scoring for the Detroit Red Wings, 16 minutes into the first period. Former Sabres Thomas Vanek assisted on the goal. A scoreless second was followed by Gionta’s unassisted goal at 1:42 of the third period, sending the game to overtime — and eventually to a shootout.

In the shootout, it was Vanek scoring for the win against his former team.

The Sabres next play at 5 p.m. Friday against the Washington Capitals in D.C.

NOTES:

  • With his goal, Brian Gionta now has five points (4+1) in six home games against Detroit since joining the Sabres.
