Gustav Nyquist started the scoring for the Detroit Red Wings, 16 minutes into the first period. Former Sabres Thomas Vanek assisted on the goal. A scoreless second was followed by Gionta’s unassisted goal at 1:42 of the third period, sending the game to overtime — and eventually to a shootout.
In the shootout, it was Vanek scoring for the win against his former team.
The Sabres next play at 5 p.m. Friday against the Washington Capitals in D.C.
NOTES:
- With his goal, Brian Gionta now has five points (4+1) in six home games against Detroit since joining the Sabres.
