BUFFALO — The Canisius College hockey team continues its five-game homestand Friday with an Atlantic Hockey Conference matchup against Mercyhurst at KeyBank Rink at HARBORCENTER.      

The contest is the first of two meetings between the programs this season. The series finale is slated for Feb. 23 at HARBORCENTER.

The Griffs (5-7-2, 4-2-2 AHC) head into the matchup in sole possession of third place in the AHC standings with eight points. Canisius can join co-leaders Army West Point and RIT in a tie for first place with a victory on Friday. The Lakers (4-8-0, 4-5-0 AHC), meanwhile, find themselves part of a three-way tie for fifth with eight points.

Canisius has been led offensively by rookies this season as three of the team’s top five point scorers are newcomers. Freshmen have accounted for nearly 40 percent of the team’s scoring output to date. Freshmen Matt Hoover (4g, 3a) and Nick Hutchison (6g, 1a) are tied for the team lead with seven points. Hutchison continues to lead the Griffs in goals scored with six. Five of his six tallies this season have come on the power play, putting him in a tie for second in the nation for man-advantage tallies. Charles Williams begins the week ranked fourth in the nation in save percentage (.945). He also ranks 13th in goals against average (2.01) and tied for second in shutouts (2) nationally. The Griffs are undefeated at HARBORCENTER this season, posting a 3-0-2 in its five home games to date. All five games have come against league competition.
