The University at Buffalo has named JoAnna Smith and Bryan Lantry as its athletes of the week.

Smith had a solid week for the Bulls as she led her team to a 2-0 record with wins over Niagara and Manhattan. With the wins, the Bulls improve to 3-0 on the year for the second straight season. Smith finished off her week averaging a team-high 15.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists while netting her first 20-point game of the season. The Southaven, MS native finished off the win over Niagara going 8-for-12 from the floor for 20 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Smith scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds in the win over Manhattan on Saturday while playing only 20 minutes. The senior has now recorded at least one three pointer in 38 of her last 39 games while netting three or more three-pointers in 23 of her last 39 games.

Lantry (133) stunned Cornell’s Mark Grey, the nation’s 15th-ranked wrestler as Buffalo nearly pulled the upset, losing just 18-15 to the 7th-ranked Big Red. After a scoreless first two periods, Lantry earned an escape to go up 1-0 in the third. A takedown by Grey put Lantry behind 2-1. Lantry earned another escape to tie the score at 2 and then, with less than 10 seconds remaining, got the takedown for the 4-2 upset victory.
