BUFFALO — Buffalo State basketball players Lovell Smith (Buffalo/McKinley) and Princella McCullough (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) were named the SUNYAC male and female basketball athletes of the week today, per the conference’s release.

Smith averaged 22.7 points and 11.7 rebounds as he registered three-straight double-doubles, pacing the Bengals to a perfect 3-0 start.

Smith scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds in a win over Pitt-Bradford on Tuesday.  He added 15 points and 11 boards in a victory over Maine-Fort Kent on Friday, and then matched his career high with 35 points to go with 12 rebounds and three blocks in a win over Villa Maria on Saturday.

Smith has blocked six shots in three games, and was named the MVP of the Buffalo State Cole’s Classic, an event the Bengals won over the weekend for the second-consecutive season.

McCullough, a sophomore transfer student, recorded three-straight double-doubles as well, averaging 17 points and 17.3 rebounds over Buffalo State’s first three games.

She opened her Bengal career scoring 12 points and adding 17 rebounds in a season-opening win at Medaille on Tuesday.  McCullough added 20 points and 19 rebounds in a win over Cazenovia on Saturday and then scored 19 points to go with 16 boards in a two-point loss to Nazareth in the Betty Abgott Invitational championship on Saturday.

For her efforts, McCullough was named to the All-Tournament team and is a big reason behind Buffalo State’s 2-1 start.

Men’s basketball heads to Alfred on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off, while the women’s team hosts Houghton at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in the Buffalo State Sports Arena.
