ALBANY — After nearly seven months of smooth sailing, the Erie Canal is closing for business as of 5 p.m.

Having opened on April 27 — the earliest opening of the canal’s navigation season since 1982 — the canal was scheduled to close today, weather permitting. It seems state officials must have known that the weather would go south today.

All recreational vessels must exit the canal system before 5 p.m.

The canal will be drained for winter maintenance before being re-filled and opened for another season of navigation in the spring.
