The sixth-seeded Niagara Purple Eagles will play the No. 3 seed Quinnipiac Bobcats in the 2016 MAAC Tournament First Round at 5 p.m. Friday at the George Bisacaa Court at Alumni Hall on the campus of Fairfield University.
NU is 13-16 all-time through 15 MAAC tournament appearances since joining the conference in 1990 campaign. This marks Niagara’s second consecutive sixth-seed ranking in the tournament. From 2009-11, Niagara won three straight conference tournament titles. This will be Niagara’s first post-season matchup against Quinnipiac. The winner of the match will face off against No. 2 seed Marist on Saturday at 5 p.m.
Niagara defeated third-seeded and defending champions Siena in straight sets in the first round, before falling in straight sets to No. 2 seed Marist in the semifinals. Alexis Gray was named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team after averaging 8.67 assists and 4.0 digs per set.
The Purple Eagles ended the regular season with a five-set win on the road against Iona, ultimately sweeping them for the season. Niagara finished the regular season with a 10-8 MAAC record. The Purple Eagles are 3-2 in their last five matches.
