The Canisius Golden Griffins return to the court tonight for the second time in the last three days, as the Blue and Gold meets Cleveland State in the second game of the Bluegrass Showcase. Canisius is coming off a 93-69 loss at No. 2/4 Kentucky Sunday evening.

The Canisius men’s basketball team hits the floor for its second game in the last three days, as the Golden Griffins play at Cleveland State tonight. Canisius is 0-1 on the season after falling to No. 2/4 Kentucky 93-69 Sunday evening in the first game of the Bluegrass Showcase in Rupp Arena. The loss drops the Griffs to 77-34 all-time in season openers (no records for 1913-14 and 1918-19 seasons). Junior Kassius Robertson led Canisius with 16 points in the loss at Kentucky. Fellow junior Jermaine Crumpton added 13 points and two steals, while senior forward Phil Valenti scored 12 points to go with a game-high seven rebounds. The game at No. 2/4 Kentucky was Canisius’ 101st all-time meeting against a ranked school. The Blue and Gold fell to 13-88 in those 101 games with the loss. Tonight marks Canisius’ first game at Cleveland State since Dec. 28, 1986.

This is the fourth meeting between these two schools, and the first since the 1986-87 season. Cleveland State leads the series 2-1. The Vikings defeated Canisius 82-61 in the last match-up between the two programs, which came Dec. 28, 1986. The series started Dec. 4, 1971 – a 102-69 win by the Griffs in Buffalo’s Memorial Auditorium.

Cleveland State opened the 2016-17 season Saturday with a 79-74 overtime loss to Kent State in Youngstown State. The Vikings shot 42.9 percent from the field in the loss, with 12 of the team’s 21 made field goals coming from 3-point land. Bobby Word had a team-high 17 points in the loss to Cleveland State, with all four of his field goals coming from behind the 3-point line. Cleveland State was picked to finish eighth in the Horizon League’s preseason poll.
