LACKWAWANNA — A pair of Troopers from the Clarence Barracks were working a traffic post Saturday evening near the Bethlehem Steel fire when something caught their eyes.

One of them noticed a large animal in an unusual area walking near Route 5 adjacent to Smoke Creek. When he approached he realized it was an approximately 50-pound beaver in some kind of distress.

The Troopers say it appeared the animal was disoriented, possibly due to living in proximity to the fire. The Troopers contacted an SPCA employee they knew who agreed to take a look at the animal.

From there, the Troopers found a large cardboard box and were able to capture the beaver and transport it to the SPCA facility in Tonawanda, where it was cared for and then transferred to the Abbe-Freeland Animal Sanctuary in Angelica.

The animal is currently being evaluated by the Cornell Wildlife Center and will likely be released in the spring.
