RIVERDALE — The Niagara University volleyball team erased a two-set deficit before eventually losing in the fifth and deciding set to the Manhattan Jaspers on Saturday.

After losing the first two sets, the Purple Eagles rallied to tie the match at 2-2. NU pulled away late in the third and fourth sets to force the deciding set. The fifth set was tied at 12-12 when the Jaspers scored the final three points to clinch the match.

Nicole Matheis had a match-high 22 kills and added 11 digs for her 11th double-double of the season. Matheis also had a match-high three aces. Alexis Gray led the match with 56 assists and had 13 for her team-leading 13th double-double. Madison May had 14 kills and three block assists, while Alex Stone had 11 kills and also had three block assists. Rylee Hunt registered a season-high 32 digs for her second straight 30-plus digs match. The match had 35 ties and 16 lead changes.

NU Head Coach Vilis Ozols said, “Our team battled and nearly pulled out the victory on the road. Manhattan did some very effective things and with the difference in scores so close that was enough to prevail.”

Niagara will play the Iona Gaels on Sunday in the regular season finale at 1 p.m.
