The Canisius College cross country program competed in the 2016 NCAA Northeast Regional Friday afternoon from Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y., with sophomore Siobhan Quinn placing 28th overall at 21:17.90, gaining the best ever finish by a Griff in the women’s 6k event. For the the men, freshman Donny Glavin had the fastest time at 32:08.90, good for 69th place.

The overall standings saw the men place 15th in the 10k event, with the women claiming the 23rd spot in the women’s 6k run.

“We had a strong day on both sides, as the women improved from last year and the men held onto a top-15 finish,” said head coach Nate Huckle. “Siobhan followed her conference championship with the best finish ever by a Griff at the regional meet. She is continuing to rewrite our record books with her outstanding performances.”

“The men pulled together for a strong team finish once again. Freshmen Donny Glavin and Anthony Belfatto stepped up well, and seniors Galen Snyder and Brennan Root helped ensure our top-15 finish.”

Aside from Quinn’s performance, the Blue and Gold saw junior Carlin Sullivan finish 117th with a time of 22:30.30, senior Macey Walker in the 140th position at 22:47.20, senior Anna Phillips placing 180th with a time of 23:20.60 and senior Haley Keene ending in 189th at 23:25.50 to round out the top five for the women.

On the men’s side, senior Galen Snyder trailed slightly behind Glavin in 76th place (32:15.00), with senior Brennan Root (94 – 32:31.98), freshman Anthony Belfatto (105 – 32:41.46) and senior Xavier Sauvageau (137 – 33:08.32) rounding out the top 5.

The 23rd place finish for the women was their highest since 1997, when the Griffs finished 19th, while the men’s side saw a top 15 finish for the third consecutive season.

The Golden Griffins will again run from Van Cortlandt Park next Saturday, when the team takes part in the ECAC/IC4A Championship.
