The Bulls actually outgained the RedHawks, 380-309, in total offense and had 27 first downs compared to Miami’s 11. However, it wasn’t enough as the Bulls couldn’t dig out of an early hole.
Trailing, 20-0, in the second quarter, defensive end Brandon Crawford provided one of the defensive highlights of the season when he literally took the ball from Miami quarterback Gus Ragland and scampered nine yards for a touchdown. It was the second career touchdown for the senior from Madison, FL.
Miami led 20-7 at the half.
The Bulls opened the second half by driving 66 yards on their opening possession and Adam Mitcheson connected on a 30-yard field goal to cut the RedHawks’ lead to 20-10.
Turnovers, however, were costly as Miami scored defensive touchdowns on UB’s next two possessions. First a 20-yard pick six, followed by a 92-yard fumble recovery, both by De’Andre Montgomery, extended the RedHawks’ lead to 32-10.
Johnson scored on a 2-yard run to make the score 35-17. It was his 18th career rushing touchdown – good for eighth in school history. Johnathan Hawkins scored on a 10-yard run, for his first career rushing touchdown, to make the score 35-24 with just over a minute to play.
Mason Schreck had a career-high 10 catches in the game for 89 yards. The senior tight end now has 50 catches on the season – one more than his first three seasons combined.
Defensively, Ishmael Hargrove led the way with six tackles. Khalil Hodge had five tackles to go over 100 on the season (103).
“We struggled with consistency,” head coach Lance Leipold said. We gave up some big plays. It was a frustrating first half offensively.”
Prior to the game, the Bulls honored 18 seniors playing in their final game at UB Stadium. Jacob Byron, Conor Clarke, Brandon Crawford, Mikel DeMonte, Remaine Douglas, Corbin Grassman, Torey Hendrick, Jordan Johnson, Roubbens Joseph, Joe Keels, Albert McCoy, Marcus McGill, Michael Mitris, Max Perisse, Malcolm Robinson, Grant Rohach, Boise Ross and Mason Schreck were all honored.
The Bulls will next play at Western Michigan next Saturday.
