The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) recently announced the 2015-2016 College Team Academic Award Winners, which included the Canisius women’s soccer team.

To qualify for the award, a team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by calculating every player’s GPA divided by the number of players on the roster.

Head coach Todd Clark said, “I am incredibly proud of our team for this collective honor. It shows not only that they are exceptional athletes committed to improving on the field as evidenced by this year’s growth but they don’t sacrifice their academic goals for soccer.  This team GPA reflects countless hours of studying and preparation, often on a bus or in a hotel room but it clearly is in evidence when you consider it takes every single player into account.  They prove themselves true student-athletes and they have done Canisius and our Athletics Department proud and I couldn’t be happier for them and more pleased was their coach.”

In total, 918 collegiate soccer teams (592, women, 326 men) were honored by the NSCAA for exemplary performance in the classroom. Among these programs are 236 schools receiving honors for both their men and women’s teams.

Canisius ended the regular season with an overall record of 8-8-0 and 6-4-0 in the conference. The Blue and Gold’s season came to end last Saturday, Oct. 29, with a 3-0 loss to Quinnipiac in the MAAC quarterfinals.
